After a rigorous and detailed process, we have officially been granted the 12-month Visa under Malaysia's Digital Nomad program. This milestone comes after five and a half months of documentation and patience, much of which was shared through our video series detailing each step of the application process.

Application Timeline and Process

The journey to approval began in early October when the Digital Nomad program opened for applications. We submitted our application by mid-October. The bulk of the delay was due to our three-month stay in Japan, during which we couldn't submit necessary certified true copies. Upon our return to Malaysia and submission of the required documents, the process accelerated significantly.

Steps Following Approval

1. Personal Bond: Upon approval, we received an agreement to sign and submit a bond of 2,000 Ringgit to MDEC, which acts as our sponsor.

2. E-Visa Application: We faced challenges with the online payment system which were resolved by using an incognito browser session. The e-visa cost was 111.89 Ringgit per person.

3. Tax Registration: The tax registration posed a unique challenge due to a dropdown menu listing over 6,000 employment types in Bahasa Malay. Utilizing Chrome's inspect tool and Google Translate, we navigated this hurdle although it was time-consuming.

4. Health Insurance: Proof of three months' health insurance is required. We opted to continue with our existing coverage.

5. Digital Nomad Pass: To obtain this, we need to submit proof of bond payment, e-visa, tax registration, and health insurance. This is done once back in Malaysia.

Financial Overview of the Visa Application

The financial aspect of the application was also considerable:

Background Checks: Costs included fees for fingerprinting and document verification both in Malaysia and through the FBI, totaling around $40 plus additional local charges.

Application Fees: For our family of five, the total application fees amounted to 3,180 Ringgit.

Notarization Fees: At the US Embassy in Malaysia, notarizing documents cost us 225 Ringgit.

Visa and Other Fees: The e-visa and additional charges for the Nomad Pass summed up to around 1,510 Ringgit.

Personal Bond: A refundable bond of 2,000 Ringgit was also part of the expenses, which we expect to reclaim post our stay or upon exiting the Digital Nomad program.

In total, excluding airfare and assuming the refund of our bond, the process cost us approximately 7,315 Ringgit or about $1,635.

Looking Ahead

With the visa in hand, our next steps involve moving back to Malaysia and finding an apartment. We aim to document our house-hunting journey, providing insights into the areas we're considering and our criteria for selecting an apartment.

This journey has not just been about obtaining a visa but understanding and navigating the intricacies of international bureaucracy, adjusting plans on the fly, and preparing for a new chapter in Malaysia. For those considering this path, patience and meticulous attention to detail in following the application procedures are crucial. Whether you're a digital nomad or long-term traveler, this experience has equipped us with valuable insights that we look forward to sharing in our future endeavors in Malaysia.
